Utilities Breadth Hits 100%
Key points
- XLU Breadth (% > 10 Day Avg) skyrocketed from under 5% to 100%.
- Historical backtest indicates that when this breadth metric surges from below 5% to 100% within a single month, there is a 61% probability of a short-term pullback over the following week.
- Despite the likelihood of immediate short-term pressure, when expanding the timeframe to one month, the sector generally recovers its losses.
Utilities sector shows extreme breadth momentum
In our report at the end of last month, we noted a potential oversold rebound opportunity in the Utilities sector. Over the subsequent half-month, XLU surged by more than 6%.
As always, the biggest question is, "So what? Will this trend continue?". We noticed that its core breadth indicator-the XLU Breadth (% > 10 Day Avg), or the percentage of XLU constituent stocks trading above their 10-day moving average-has hit 100%.
